PAIN MANAGEMENT IN THE OTC SECTION: SPECIAL POPULATIONS AND CONSIDERATIONS

PGY-2 Pharmacotherapy Resident, Feik School of Pharmacy
Upon completion of this activity, pharmacists will be able to:
1. Recall the various types of pain a patient may present with, including nociceptive and neuropathic pain, and
identify their common presenting characteristics
2. Determine which OTC pain medications are appropriate for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding and in
those who have comorbidities
3. Describe the available formulation of common OTC pain medications and select the most appropriate
formulation based on patient-specific factors
4. Discuss a patient case and evaluate presenting symptoms, medical history, and patient preferences to
recommend an appropriate OTC pain medication in the community pharmacy setting
Upon completion of this activity, technicians will be able to:
1. Recognize common presenting symptoms of nociceptive and neuropathic pain
2. Assist in selecting appropriate medications based on Pharmacist recommendations
3. Compare and contrast the available formulations of common OTC pain medications
