GETTING UNDER THE SKIN: HOW TO SELECT PRODUCTS FOR ATOPIC DERMATITIS, DRY SKIN, CONTACT DERMATITIS, AND PRICKLY HEAT

Upon completion of this activity, pharmacists will be able to:
1. Recall the pathophysiology, clinical presentation, and causes of atopic dermatitis, dry skin, contact dermatitis, and prickly heat.
2. Identify the main ingredients in moisturizers that are used to treat atopic dermatitis, dry skin, contact dermatitis, or prickly heat.
3. Justify choosing a specific type of moisturizer to treat atopic dermatitis, dry skin, contact dermatitis, or prickly heat.
4. Provided a patient case, select the appropriate nonpharmacologic treatment for atopic dermatitis, dry skin, contact dermatitis, or prickly heat.
5. Distinguish if a patient needs a medical referral based on their reported signs and symptoms.
Upon completion of this activity, pharmacy technicians will be able to:
1. Identify at least one cause of atopic dermatitis and one cause of contact dermatitis.
2. List two products that can be used to treat prickly heat.
3. Describe why products to treat atopic dermatitis, dry skin, or contact dermatitis should not contain fragrances.
4. Given a patient case, give examples of questions to ask a patient that would help a pharmacist make a treatment
decision for a skin condition
