DON’T FEEL THE BURN: ILLUMINATING SUN SAFETY

Assistant Professor UIW Feik School of Pharmacy 

Upon completion of this activity, pharmacists will be able to: 

1. Differentiate the different types of UV rays, their sources, and the effects on skin health. 

2. Evaluate the FDA standards and regulations governing sunscreen products, including labeling requirements, SPF ratings, and safety considerations. 

3. Discuss the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) values as a measure of sunscreen effectiveness, its limitations, and common misconceptions 

4. Examine the different active ingredients commonly found in sunscreens and their potential implications for patient health. 

5. Differentiate between types of sunscreen and formulations available on the market, including physical blockers, chemical absorbers, lotions and sprays, to provide appropriate recommendations to patients. 

Upon completion of this activity, technicians will be able to: 

1. Recognize the types of UV rays blocked by sunscreen. 

2. Recall the FDA standards for sunscreen products. 

3. Discuss the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) and how to interpret the number. 

4. List the active ingredients in sunscreen that could cause harm. 

5. Identify the different types of sunscreens available.
